How do you get your PUK phone unlock key?

my freinds were messing with my phone and they tried lockin my sim card as a prank. well they made it so that the sim locked itself. now its telling me that it needs a phone unlock key. do i call the service provider or do i take i into the store. i have att so this isbonly with att
