How do you get T-Mobile on an AT&T IPHONE?

My cousins gave me an iphone as a present, but I have T-Mobile. Is there any way to get T-Mobile on it, even though its made for AT&T? I've heard Jail-breaking? or going to an Apple store? Or going to a T-Mobile store to get it unlocked? Which is my best route and also the cheapest. Thanks!
