How do you get sound from your xbox 360 elite to your theatre sound system?

I have the elite console, got my HDMI cable hooked to the back of the HDTV and the other end (of course) to the elite... now what? Am I missing something, i thought a HDMI cable would take care of both sound and audio with its single wire connection. Do I need the audio wires too?? I just want to hear my games and movies in 5.1 dolby on my sony system!!
