i'm a beginning gardener in the central east coast of florida with my first seeds begining to grow leaves. i have carrot, spinach, broccoli, garlic, basil, and a friend gifted me some tomato and pepper plants that are beginning to produce. i also have grubs, fire ants, moles, and the kind of bug that lays eggs on the leaves and takes away the green on them. how do you control them in a way that the vegetables wont absorb any insecticide chemicals? any tips? thanks for your time.

First time you rototill the garden obtain some mined volcanic ash, that is know to contain diatoms, and spread it lightly over the area to be tilled. It will get rid of all cutworms and grubs. and is a good soil amendment. A great mix organic mix that I use is dish soap, vegetable oil, baking soda, and skim milk. I always spray after 8 pm and if the temperature is going to exceed 80 degrees the next day. I wash this spray off the next morning to prevent uv damage, as the dish soap is a contact only spray. Washing off plants is also a very effective way to get rid of spider mites they just can't get back on the plant, and are really hard to reach with your spray, and they need to be completely coated. Knocking them off the plant is very effective. Same with Aphids, aphids are very easy to kill, but they are so prolific they almost come out reproducing. I use cats to keep rodents from the garden. Guess I'm a bit too frugal to use some of the BT's and other organics. I want to walk down to my local Aldi's and get the spray just as cheap as I can. It works just as good as dawn, safers soap and whatever is more expensive. Did make a mistake with my neighbor last year teaching him how to mix the stuff. I licked the paint stick to emphasize how safe the mix was biggg mistake, dish soap don't taste very good.

Plant a little fennel in the garden to attract lady bugs. They eat aphids. You may also consider getting some praying mantis' to release in the garden as they eat other bugs as well. Sprouting garlic also deters some bugs, and you can crush it and mix with water and spray on plants.

Companion planting is a great way to deter insects form the garden, especially companion plants of the allium variety: garlic, chives, scallions, onions.

Also, BT insecticidal soap is safe for organic or pesticide-free gardening. The BT toxin in the soap works only on the insects with the toxin receptors. Since humans, house pets, etc do not have the receptors, the toxin is completely harmless.
