How do you get out of fees charged by Solo Mobile / Bell?

I recently switched phone companies, from Solo Mobile (an cell phone provider that is a branch of Bell), to Koodo Mobile. I was on a three year contract with Solo, and immediately stopped using Solo as soon as the plan expired since I was paying $40/month for basic calling - no texting, caller ID, voice message... NOTHING! An absolute waste of money.

Anyway, I spoke to TWO Solo representatives. One at the Solo booth in person, and another representative on the phone. I told them how I want to terminate the plan as soon as the three year contract expires. When I had switched to Koodo, my Solo plan was about to be over (in a few more days), and if I continued using the plan I'd just be paying on a pay-as-you-go basis. The first representative said that I should just go ahead and switch to Koodo because there is a window of time that you can cancel your plan without having to pay any fees at all, and I was in that window. So I obtained my account information, and switched to Koodo.
The next day, I called Solo and spoke to a representative on the phone to make sure that my plan was canceled. He said "yes, it was no problem, however you didn't cancel on the exactly 30 day mark of your billing cycle so you will have to pay one more bill of about $30." I said that was reasonable, and that was that. I finally detached myself from the horrible Bell giant.

Yesterday, I got a bill from Solo saying that I owe them $220.00 for Termination Liability Charges. WHAT THE HELL?! Not only was I 100% sure that my three year contract was over (trust me, I've been counting down the days that I could escape from any connections with Bell), but I talked to two of their representatives, both of whom said that I could terminate the plan with them without any additional cancellation charges.

How am I supposed to get out of these charges? It's not like I can threaten them to leave... since I've already left. I also can't threaten them with removing all other services with them, because I have switched my Internet service provider, home phone, and cable to Rogers a long time ago. This makes absolutely no sense!

If there's one piece of advice I can give to anyone... DO NOT GO WITH BELL! They are a nightmare. The stories I could tell you about Bell Internet as a university student during exams would make you cringe.
