How do you get a 1080p picture through a Sharp Aquos TV and a Sony Blu-ray player?

I have just got a Sony Blu-ray player and although the picture is good, it is not at the highest 'p' it can be. How do I change the settings on either device to allow the maximum 1080p? Thanks!
