How do you fix the float in a cars fuel tank?

I have just bought a second hand VT Holden Commodore 98 model Executive, The problem is the fuel never reads right. On 3 occasions now I have run out of petrol. Can anybody help with this. I am near St Marys in western Sydney. How much would it cost to fix etc etc. Any help would be great.
