how do you fix a code 42 on a gm?

I have a 88 gm 1 ton, 454 TBI, It seems to me the timing is not advancing, it dosent have a knock sensor, I checked the codes and it came up a 42, that's bypass or est circuit, and also a 44, that's 02 sensor, I can replace the 02 sensor but the code 42, I dont have a clue, I do know it has something to do with the timing, how do I go about fixing it..thank's
