how do you find a great spinal surgeon in the area you live ?

I don't have any great advice except DON'T GIVE UP! Early in my 3 years of pain I consulted 2 local pain mgt. docs & hated them both (they just wanted to inject things that had already been injected or do TENS & heating pad therapy, which I found useless). Needless to say, this past Nov. my orthopedist referred me to a new pain mgt. doc who has been my saviour - he is flipping fabulous! Had I not received that referral, I never would have found him. So that was a lesson to me - never stop looking - there are good docs out there. Ask for referrals from any doctor you already know/like (even your PCP). I wish you lots of luck.

Hello jenjen,

Are you looking for someone near where you live specifically? You will have quite a wide choice if so.

If you could say a bit more about what problems you have it would be easier to determine what type of specialist you're in need of....

If you have a particularly difficult problem you could look into the Mayo Clinic.

Otherwise, in general, you can look at some of the sites on the internet that list their merabers and their qualifications...things like the American Medical Assoc.

Also ask nurses or physical therapists - ask them if you had a family meraber with a bad back who would you encourage them to go to? Normally they are more than happy to give an recommendation. Good luck.

I agree about asking those in the medical profession. We may not be able to tell you who to go to but we can DEFINITELY tell you who NOT to go to :D
