How do you feel about writers who claim to be "published authors", but...?

...but their only "published" works are self-published?

I was just wondering if I've got the wrong idea for being really annoyed by this (and sometimes for just wanting to laugh in their face). Maybe I don't even have a right to say much, seeing as I don't have any of my work in print, self-published or otherwise. But it honestly bugs me when people are all proud about being a "published author" and then you find out they're really just self-published. I've seen a couple here on Y!A like that, and I met one from my town about a year ago. Oppinions?

BQ: Would you ever consider self-publishing, and if so, under what conditions?
Me, I don't think I'd ever self-publish to make a profit or get my book out there. I've considered having a few copies of my book printed (once its finished and if it completely fails to get published traditionally) just to give to family and friends or for my future children to have. My great great grandpa was a writer and I have some of his stuff. I think its just fun to be able to read it once in a while, since he's my ancestor and all that.

BQ2: What's your current writing project, and how is it going so far?
I'm writing the first draft of the second story in my series. Its coming along at a slow but steady pace. I should be writing more since I know my free time is going to be cut significantly shorter in a few weeks when my baby is born, but I don't want to rush it.
@The Reader, The Writer, and The Liar: By self-publishing, I'm referring to publishing copies of your book with a self-publishing company, often called a "vanity press." You pay them to print your book, often really high fees, and then you're responsible for selling and distributing it yourself. Some companies even require you to buy a certain number of copies and if you can't sell them all, too bad for you. A self-publisher won't market your book and they don't care about you as an author. They want your money, that's it. They don't care about the quality of what they publish either. Anyone can self-publish, so there are a lot of poorly-written books out there. There's no real test of whether your book is good or not---no agents and editors to go through, no publishers to impress with your writing. You could write a whole load of complete crap and still get it published, and oftentimes that's what happens. I'm not saying all self-published books are rubbish, because I'm sure there ar
