How do you extricate yourself politely if someone latches on to you at a party?

I like Joanne's answer. I actually added this question because I think most people these days could improve their etiquette. Here is one way I heard to do the above: draw more and more people into your conversational circle until you can slip away unnoticed. Very slick IMHO.

Say, that's mean and just walk away.

I say "excuse me, I have to use the bathroom" and then I don't return to that person. It makes it pretty clear I think.
