How do you determine which type of answering to be used for history SBQs?

For typical SBQs, there are questions like 'How similar(eg) are sources A and B?' or like 'In what ways are sources A and B similar?' that sort of thing, of course, there are many more, which of these type of questions require both sides (ie differences and similarities) and which require only one side??
