Afterall, all dogs were mutts at some point. I see people on DS all the time getting their hackles up over if a 'chorkie' or 'labradoodle' is a breed or a mutt.
Take the American pit bull, the breed is not an AKC registered breed, there are no standards for it, yet nobody ever seems to say pits are just mutts! But a labradoodle!? Oh god no! It's just a mutt! When in reality the general populace treats labradoodles more like a breed than pits! They must be 1 part lab 1 part poodle, whereas pits... ? Stout, boxy heads? All relative terms!
So why do people get so offended when you say your dog is a 'chorkie'? Instead of a mutt or yorkie mix or whatever? Because in the world outside of DS a 'chorkie' is a breed, and the name tells you exactly what kind of mix it is! It won't be long before pits and chorkies and labradoodles and all those other designer dogs will be AKC registered breeds, then what are the DS snobs gonna complain about? Lol!

A.) I believe that breeding to be cute and fuzzy is a pretty good purpose. Not everybody who owns a dog uses them to hunt, herd or work. So this should be a non-issue. I also have personally met several breeders of these mutts that are very conscious about who they sell too and how they breed. To generalize that all breeders of designer dogs is just plain ignorant.
B) There is no breed standard YET. As I said before all "purebreds" started out as mutt's. They all came from other breeds and were bred as YOU said for a purpose. Dog Breeds were standardized long after the purebreds we have today were popular. Purebred snobs did not arise until standardized breeds did, and with the popularity of these designer dogs going UP it is only a matter of time before they do become standard.
C) All breed breed true, that is correct, but not at the beginning of their breed. Designer dogs are fairly new breed so just like all other purebreds it will take time for them to breed true.
@Kaper
Thank you for all the information, I didn't even realize that the APBT was recognized in UKC.
All I am trying to say is that there is a possibility that designer dogs will become a recognized breed eventually, and that they are no different from today's purebreds...except they are being bred for looks instead of skills. Most purebreds were mutts before people decided that they were purebreds! They are the product of careful breeding! Which is what is going on with designer dogs today! I just don't get why everybody gets so pissed about this!

D) Lol, I said, "in the world outside DS, a chorkie is a breed which tells you what mix it is" because in the world out side of your dreams wants to know what two breeds made this adorable little puppy, oh! a Yorkie and Chihuahua? lets call it a chorkie! just like they call lion tiger mixes ligers! Just like German Shepards are from where!? no! Germany? and they're what? Shepherding dogs!? what should we call this dog?hmmm... It's just a NAME, get over it!
E) I think you are very wrong, because popular dogs are the dogs that become recognized. Just like German Shepards are popular, and labs, and poodles and all other 'purebreds'.
@Kaper(2)Actually, there is an effort, in my part of the country people got sick of everybody saying their dog was just a mutt when they would look at all their friends with the same "breed" or mix or whatever of mutt and realize that said people were just being morons, the whole idea that only byb's make designer dogs and they are worthless is dumb. There is already millions of people who love their chorkies and their is a huge market for designer dogs. And eventually owners are going to get sick of people acting like their "purebreds" are better than their maltipoos, and retaliate!
Anyways, whenever all this is said and done, I still will never pay more than an adoption fee for any dog, but if my grandma wants her maltipoo, I'm not gonna tell her that her dog is nothing than a mutt. Because I don't think it is. It's a breed, that hasn't been recognized yet. =]
