How do you create a counter using php that counts the number of clicks a link/image has?

I want to create something where I post a picture on a forum from a different website made using php where there is a counter linked to that image that shows how many clicks it has.

It should look the same as those adoption sites (sorry I don't have a link but you must have seen them around) where you have to get your 'pet' clicked the most amount of time.

And is it possible for there to be a system in place where the picture changes automatically when a certain amount of clicks has been reached?
