How do you copy an area and paste it as an image in another folder with mac os x?

What I mean is, for microsoft paint on a microsoft, when you use the cut tool and enclose an area on your picture, then right click the area, and select copy to. Then you can save the area you enclosed as an image in a folder. I need to know how to do that on a mac os x 10.4.

Can you please help?
