How do you connect an iphone to another device using bluetooth?

hi amm i think i ifones will only connect to other ifones sorry you wont be able to connect it to your laptop sorry
 
I cant seem to get my iphone to connect to my laptop , Tom Tom or old phone using the iphone bluetooth .
On my old phone I had no problems connecting to any other bluetooth devices but the iphone just will not connect . The old phone gives a message saying other device does not support this . Is it me or is the bluetooth on an iphone designed not to connect to other bluetooth devices if so what is the point of bluetooth on the iphone , sorry for ranting but after paying a lot of money for a phone you would expect bluetooth to be simple . thanks for any help you can offer.
thanks jake im getting the feeling that this might be the case , it sucks :-)
aha I have just managed to get it to work with my tom tom so not quite as bad as I feared :-)
