How do you compose classical music? Any rules?

I mean like, is there a certain structure? Are there any general rules?

My music theory class assigned homework to compose five eight measure pieces, but my teacher gave practically no explanation on how to do it.
Also, one of the pieces have to be in a minor key. How would you compose a piece of music to sound minor instead of major? The key signature would be the same, wouldn't it?
