how do you choose a dissertation topic?

Hi, i am currently studying joint hons history at uni, and am just about to go into my 3rd year. With it being a 3rd year, we are required to do an undergraduate dissertation of 10, 000 words, and we are at the point now where we have to choose a topic. I know this might seem obvious/ stupid, but how do you go about choosing an undergraduate dissertation topic? and more importantly how do you know whether your topic is interesting (in other words how do you know if you are passionate/enthusiastic about a topic that will keep you going for 12 months)? Its just i am really worried about this, as i am finding it actually more harder than it actually is (mainly because the history dept at my uni is quite small, and has only a limited number of research interests/areas to choose from, and these don't seem to dedicate a seperate session just to deal with the logistics of how to do a dissertation, choose a topic etc.) Also, another thing i am worried about, is i am considering applying to do a MA in European History after my degree at two others unis later this year. I am hearing different things from different tutors; one tutor says that you would have more chance being accepted if you did an undergraduate history dissertation that is european history as it will look more better; whereas another tutors says it dosen't really matter. i was wondering, how true is this?. (This is because, apart from my dissertation module, which my initial proposal was to do something on south asian history, my other module(s) will be european history based. ) i would be grateful if someone (maybe another history graduate) could give me some advice with these things
