How do you check the check engine light on a 1993 jeep grand cherokee limited?

my check engine light is on, it comes on and off. i Just passed smog a week ago and passed all emissions. I think it maybe a sensor on the transmission sense my jeep is having troubble shifting gears. Does anyone know hwo to check the check engine light on a 1993 jeep grand cherokee limited? any help will be much appreciated
