how do you build credit if you have none?

I dont have much credit and the one thing on my credit report is where i co signed with someone like 5 years ago. I have applied for credit cards and they say i don't have enough credit and i have applied for loans and the co signer thing always comes up. I have had the same job for years and i own my house, but i don't have a checking account, are there any options left to help my credit?
