How do you brighten a picture in photoshop (CS4)?

I am trying to brighten just one picture, not everything. I understand that I need to create a adjustment layer and then got to brightness/ contrast, but when I do that, it brightens everything. I try to click just on the layer that I'm trying to brighten but it doesn't make a difference. Any help?
 
if your just trying to adjust a single object in a picture or something you need to create a clipping mask around that object on a seperate letter. i dont remember exactly how to do it, but you can type it in google and itll give you tutorials.
