How do you breathe from your diaphragm when singing?

I know the belly expands when done properly, but when i breathe, even if my belly expands, i feel like my lungs aren't getting filled with air. I know there's an exercise where you lie down and feel it, but how do you transfer the feeling to a standing up position?
