How do you become an engineer for a major car company?

I think I want to become an engineer in the future. I read about cars and how they are engineered to be what they are now in the streets.

What is the branch of engineering that has to do with the power and performance of a car?

And how do you become an engineer for a major car company like Toyota, Ford, etc...
