How do you become a high school history teacher?

My boyfriend would like to become a high school history teacher, but we are unclear as to the requirements for this. Can anyone tell me, in dumbed-down, everyday language, what to do to become a high-school teacher? For instance, what degrees he should get (one in education or in history?), etc.
