How do you ask someone about their sexuality?

I have a guy friend named Michael whom I really enjoy spending time with. I want to step things up and become more than friends, but I don't know if he's gay. He REALLY seems like it, but hasn't told me...How would YOU ask? (Without making it akward).

bring up gay subjects (the parade, music, gay actors, etc) sometimes and see how he reacts to them.
