how do you ask a newspaper/its editor for payment for an article you've submitted and

they've printed? i'm a freelance writer. this is the first article that has actually been published. and this is the first time i've ever entered the field.
i really dont know how to go about it.
it also doesnt help that the editor is my 2nd cousin's father.

no i did not sign any agreement but isn't it like illegal to use someone's work without any compensation?
