How do you adjust the transmission in a 1971 AMC Mail Jeep?

The Jeep runs fine, but reverse gear is not working. Someone told me I may just have to adjust the reverse band on the transmission. Once again, it is a 1971 AMC mail jeep with the steering wheel on the right-hand side. It has a 232 straight six. Thanks
 
Assuming you are talking about automatic trans..

Reverse gear is controlled by a band around a clutch, inside the trans...

there is an inch pound torque setting for the band...you drain the fluid, remove the pan, tighten the the bolt on the band to the specified setting with an inch pound torque wrench...

Less than 100.00 at the trans shop, with a fluid/filter change....
