I was in the pet shop and they had these fish with a heart and polka dots on one side (in neon colors) and the word love written on the other. how does that happen??
Thanks everyone! I hate pet shops anyway, they dont treat their animals well!

they usually strip it of its slime coat, inject it with the dyes and such, and then put it in a water solution to grow its slime coat back so that the color cant diffuse out of the fish because the slime coat stops it, either way it can and will have diverse effects on the fish such as stunted growth shortened life spans or it can be prone to disease, its just wrong and i advise you heavuily not to waste your money or anyones money on them, hope this helps.

i worked at a aquarium for a few years about 10 years ago...this is a kind of new thing they are doing to sell fish..they are injecting dye into the fish scales...they did it in the past where they would color a fish blue or pink to sell a fish to your young son or daughter...i'm not a big fan..it doen't look natural...but i guess it puts smiles on the kids faces

They inject the fish with dyes which is a brutal and cruel process. Some that are entirely one color are usually fed food filled with dyes. They usually call them "Painted" or "Tattooed", but I call it "Inhumane".

Many of the fish that are injected do not live to their full life span or die while actually being filled with dyes.

Please, I urge you to never ever purchase a fish that you even suspect was dyed.

please do not buy anything from that shop and tell other people about the poor fish who have to suffer for the shop keepers pockets because that is what it boils down to money not the love of keeping fish or trying to do the best for them but torture is the closest word,
injected under the scales a bit like a tattoo & i am also told that a lot of them, easy over half the fish that have this done die the other half only live a short life.
don't waste your money and don't let any of your friends waste there money ether.

They inject them with dyes. Not only is is very painful to the fish but it also very deadly with about an 80% mortality rate. It causes a shorter life span and increased disease rate.
