How do the newer Jeeps (JK) compare to the older Jeeps (TJ)?

I cannot find a nice-enough TJ (1998-2006) Jeep Wrangler and am considering a new one. How do they both compare on-road and off-road? For me, the smaller engine size is bothering me. My old TJ Sahara had adequate power.
