How do people become photo editors?

Professional Photographers don't edit their photos that much. So therefore, photo editors like the kind you are talking about hardly exist.

Photo editors for newspapers and magazines just do layouts and sizing and picking out photos and pre-pressing them for print.
 
Do you just go to college for photography? Or what major would you go for? My sister is a photographer and will hire me if i go through the schooling for photo editing because i do a good job at it, just wondering where i should go from here
