How do install PHP 5.3 on a Win XP machine? (And have it actually work)?

And please don't refer me to some web page. I know that there's all kind of voodoo magic that "they" suggest, I want to know if anyone understands how this sloppy excuse for a platform actually works.
I don't mean to say that I don't appreciate a good link, but nothing I've seen so far describes the actual experience I'm dealing with.
