How do I write a flame test reaction?

I did an experiment testing for an unknown compound. I got negative tests for potassum and sodium (I ended up having Iron (III) Sulfate).

Anyways, I needed to express equations for both. This is my data:
I first tested with a known solution (NaCl) and added HCl:
NaCl + HCl + flame --> reaction
Then I tested my unknown with HCl:
Fe2(SO4)3 + HCl + flame --> not the same reaction, or no reaction. I don"t know which!

Now for the K+ test:
known:
KCl+HCl+flame-->reaction
unknown solution (which ended up being Iron (III) SUlfate):
Fe2(SO4)3+HCl+flame --> either different reaction or no reaction.

These were BOTH negative test.

What is the HCl used for?
Is this one of the experiments with the triangle (heat) under the yeild symbol?
Thanks for your time!
