How do I work out what size mountain bike I need?

I'm 5'3' ish, I have a 32" inside leg and I'm female. What size mountain bike do I need? I'm fairly sure I had a 19" the last time I had a bike. I want a women's hardtail. My husband's is a 19" and he has the seat up about 3 inches and the seat is about level with my hip bone, but If I try and get on his bike the seat feels too high but if I put it down then I think it would be ok. Is a 19" men's and a 19" women's the same size or are the proportions different, or would a 17" be more comfortable for me anyway because I am quite short? His is Ridgeback and I'm looking at getting a Ridgeback.

Men's and women's bikes are the same size on the seat tube where they are measured. Where they differ is the distance between the handle bars to the seat, handle bar and saddle width. Take your inseam X .59 to get the correct size frame. 32 X .59 = 18.88 inches. If you got the 17" frame the handlebars will be lower and will be more uncomfortable.

It would seem to me that you already have it figured out!
Husbands seat on his 19" is too high but the standover on the frame fits you so 19 it must be however the differences between womens specific and mens is not all that great between the two in most brands. Im my opnion there is not all that much difference since we (men and women) are all built pretty much the same way, hands (2) torso (1) legs (2) arms (2) and proportionally similar...The cycling industry as a whole believes that women are smaller than their male counterparts and that may be true as are the frame dimensions on female specific frames vs male specific frames but its only an inch or two at most and 9/10 females that I encounter in my daily grind at the shop choose the mens version over their own! Fit is first go stand over and sit on a few and ride. I think you are probably right in there though but try a 17 and an 19 and ride each until you get the best fit for you.
