HOW DO I WATCH CABLE ON MY PANASONIC TC-P42C2?

ok i have a 42 inch on this model and i hooked up the cable into my tv but still it wont allow me to select the cable input, i can choose the 2 hdmi, the 2 component, and the 2 av video, but the tv font stays gray and wont allow me to choose it as my input, can anyone help cause i dont know what to do
