How do I train my dog to run along side my bike?

There's products called the Springer, Walkydog, and K9 Cruiser which all attach to the bike to keep your dog safely jogging next to you.

Josie used to run next to my bike on cue, but there was an incident with her chasing after a squirrel and almost getting hit by a car which made me switch to one of these products. Call your local bike stores, see if they have anything similar. The ones I mentioned above are online order and pretty expensive, I found one for $20 at a local bike shop.

Holding a leash while riding a bike can be very dangerous, I would never do it because of Josie's impulse and the fact that she's also 70 lbs, and I'm also clumsy and do not want to fall and have my dog go running off. With the bike attachment, she can't pull me off and she is a very determinded puller.

Just make sure to start with short distances and work your way up, dogs will run for as long as you go, but that doesn't mean they can handle it. Keep water with you and a leash. Josie and I are up to 7 miles on our bike rides, so we use doggy boots to keep her pads from tearing up, which is another thing to keep an eye on.

But it's the best and most rewarding exercise for the both of us. She's high strung and loves to run, there's nothing else that gets her excited like a 'bike ride'. And for the first half, I don't even really have to pedal. Have fun

You should use a harness. If your dog tries to darts off or bolts after other dogs animals etc your dog needs to trained not to do this behavior make sure your dog stays on your side away from traffic. Start off by walking your dog while walking your bike go somewhere there are no other distractions for the first few times then next you can start sitting on your bike pushing your self with your feet while your dog is stays on your side at all times you need to make sure you have complete control of your bike and your dog.

I see many people with their dogs running along side their bikes and I love bike riding and my dog loves running. How do I keep her from running under the wheels or stopping suddenly and getting jerked on her collar? Should I use a harness?

I have no idea what they're called, but they make a gadget that attaches to the bike that is like a pole/arm so that the dog can only be a certain distance from the bike. The dog has to turn when you turn and it can't get in front of the wheel. Of course, you would have to make sure that the leash was very short. You might want to try to look for one in a sporting good store, or something on those lines. I do know that they make them.

You have to get her used to being around the bike first. One of my dogs wasnt so keen to be near the bike at fist. Then gradually build it up. Start by walking while pushing the bike and have your dog where she would be if you were riding it.

You can get devices that are made for holding the lead so you have both hands for riding. I personally hold the lead in my hand but I have come off the bike when she decided to take off one day as it makes you more unsteady.
