How do I train my Chihuahua puppy to stop whining?

I brought home a ten week old chihuahua puppy on Saturday and am doing my best to "do things right" regarding training him.

I have him mostly used to being crated - whines for a few minutes but then settles, but he goes nuts when he is not crated and I am sitting on the bed or couch. He whines, jumps up, etc. What I understand is that I should not let him up when he is whining or jumping, as this reinforces the behavior, but so far this is not working. Are there any other tricks I might try, or is this just normal puppy behavior (clingy-ness) that he will grow out of?

Thanks!

Have you tried threatening him with physical punishment... don't actually hit him just threaten him. Possibly with a belt or tennis racket to show "your serious" but don't actually do it. Also have you thought about getting a dog that isn't related to a lemming... just putting that out there.

yes puppies do this alot, and they do grow out of it.
keep doing what you are doing it will work eventually, when he is whining you need to ignore him. That sends the message that " you are in my house, you are my dog, that is not appropriate behavior and I will not pay attention to you when you do it."
He will catch on and learn his boundaries.
if you have any questions like potty training etc. email me at: [email protected]
I'd love to help!!
