How do I test a battery for a Sony Handycam?

The video camera works fine when plugged in to AC power, but it wont charge the battery. How do I test the battery? Maybe the charger in the camera is no good? The dog pulled the video camera down onto the cement floor and dragged it around. I've tried everything and the battery just wont charge. It's 115 dollars for a new one.
