How do I talk to the guy I like?

I really like a guy in one of my classes. I'm an extremely shy girl. I'm 19 and he's 21 I believe. I've tried a million times to smile at him or talk to him, but every time I try something goes wrong or I panic. I stare at him to try and get his attention and he occasionally stares back and recently my friend said he watched me as I got up and crossed the room. I don't know what to do. I know his school email address and I was thinking about sending him a secret admirer letter before our last day of class next Thursday and see if he knows that it's me. I don't know what to do. And there isn't really time to speak to him on Thursday because it's the day of our final. Please help me. I want to talk to him or at least get his attention before the Christmas break and before I'll never see him again.
