How do I talk to someone on World of Warcraft when I have a trial account?

So I made an account.
Its trial
I added my bf as a friend,but I cant add him to a group or talk to him on there because its a trial
Any way I can let him know Im online?
(cant call him he can only offline to call his house,he is always online)
