I am trying to take photos of a hummingbird on my porch in the shade. None of the photos are turning out, it just shows a black looking bird. What setting should i change so that it will pick up the detail of the bird. Should i also use flash? the auto flash did not go off.

Set your white balance to open shade, raise your ISO so your camera will shoot at a high shutter speed.

And yes, you can tell you camera to use the flash ... just look in your owners manual how to do that.

Use a flash with a kleenex over the flash. It should give you perfect lighting ...:-)

I have a lot of tricks.. Have no choice... I run a printing complany..

As for the setting, if, it is a close-up, don't use depth of field. Rather, open the lens to one setting before the max.

That should work fine.

Good Luck and show me the results.. Am curious

Set up a whitish light behind you that gives plenty of light to the area. Also, use the macro setting shown by a little picture of a flower. It will help to pick out the detail.
I've tried photographing hummingbirds in the past and it's relly hard to get a good picture with no blurr. If your camera has a multiple picture setting you should definitely use that as well, then you can pick out the best pictures afterwards.
Good luck!
