...is also OnStar Phone equipped? I followed the instructions in the manual, but all that manages to do is get me back to making an On-Star phone call, which I do not want to do. I want to set up my G8 to use the radio as a hands-free Bluetooth device.
 
How far do you get on the pairing? At which point does it try to make a call with on-Star?

You need the pairing code for your phone. do you have it? Did you turn your phone on and have it searching for a device? If you don't set the phone up properly the car will not see a BT device and will default back to the phone built into the car.
 
Have your phone set and ready to do a bluetooth connection. Push the on-star button when it says on-star ready say bluetooth. It will say bluetooth ready say pair when the two are set you will see a pairing code on the dash display that's the code for your phone type it in. Once you do that you should be ready to use the bluetooth options. You can get the instructions for the voice command from a dealer .
