How do I set up Music from my SD card as my ringtone on my Propel cellphone?

I just bought a propel cellphone and I inserted my old SD card with the music I downloaded from my computer and everytime I try it tells me that it is too large to set as ringtone is there a way around this? I will rate and give best answer!
 
Can you record the part of the song you want as your ring tone, so it makes the file smaller?
