the chain slipped and luckily i didnt mess the engine up,and a friend is going to help em replace the chain but i need to know how to set the timing...

my dad said something about lining up the notches on the gears, but he wasnt sure how.

when you get the chain back on, the 2 timing gears need to be aligned correctly at that time. A service manual will tell you where the marks should line up.

the car computer adjusts timing as it needs to after that.

If it had a distributor you loosen it and rotate it while viewing the notches on the gears with a timing light. Once the line up correctly it is all set. You may want to at least get a haynes manual from Autozone or something to help you.
