How do I Set my playstation to run games in 1080p?

I have GTA4 and on the back it says it supports 720 1080i and 1080p but it only runs in 720 I know my TV supports 1080 coz my Blue ray disc play in that but my games dont
the main menu for my playstation is 1080I but GTA4 only plays in 720p my tv does support 1080i but not 1080p as i've just found out
