How do I reset the on-board computer on my 4.0 ltr 1995 Ford Ranger?

I am using a mileage improving gas additive called ca40, and saw no results. The product support person recommended I reset my computer because that may help. They recommended disconnecting the battery for 12-24 hrs, or disconnect the battery cables, and briefly touch the positive and negative together. Will this work, is it safe, and is this the best method?
 
The above answer will "reset" your e.c.m. However any significant improvement to gas mileage would already be in place by car manufacturers.Remember that the feds have been pushing car companies for years to improve efficiency-so if additives or other snake oil products worked-they would be used nation wide (world wide for that matter).Save your money (too late ?) & keep tire pressures up & keep air filters clean.
