How do I reset the ecm on my car?

Ok so I was told that if I disconnect the negative battery cable from my 1997 Dodge Avenger (according to my haynes man.) for at least 10 seconds it will reset the ecm. Well I disconnected both the positive and the negative overnight, and I come back out to start my car this morning, and the check engine light is still on!!! What the hell??? AND...once I get the light reset, what is the "drive cycle" distance, or milage for the ecm to be "ready" to test? I have NJ state inspection due this week, and just changed the EGR system in it so now I have to get the light off. Please help.

There is a hard code stored in the computer. Sometimes the battery trick works and sometimes it doesn't. You can buy a code reader at walmart or your local auto parts store for about $100.00. You could also take it to the local garage and have them erase it for about $40.00. Some auto parts stores will erase it for free. Unfortunately the code will probably come right back and the check engine light will come on before you leave the parking lot. The only way to get rid of it for good is to fix the problem. You can usually cycle the key on and off three times and count the number of times the check engine light flashes and that will tell you what code is in there. See the section of your manual on how to retrieve codes.GOOD LUCK!!
