How do I remove rust off a bicycle rims?

Although I have kept it covered, the rims got rust on them from the weather. The tires are good and holding air, so I don't want to use anything that might damage them. It's just the rims that are looking bad. It would be a real pain to have to remove the tires first as I also have a child's carrier trailer. Any experience with this and solutions out there?? Thank you
