How do I remove and replace a headlight dimmer switch on an '85 Thunderbird ford car?

While driving I pulled the turn signal lever back toward me to get the high beams to come on and I felt what felt like plastic snapping at the end of the switch-lever. It also sounded like cracking plastic at this time and the stupid lever just hung there instead of clicking into it's normal high-beam position on the steering column. The headlights went off and I had to drive home holding the lever pulled back towards me to get any headlights; it was highbeams or nothing all the way.
