How do I record my wife's music from her keyboard piano?

Wife's got a Yamaha YPG-235 (Info), and I've finally convinced her to let me hang out on the couch near the piano while she plays.

She's fucking amazing, that's all there is to it. Just just sits down... and plays. No lessons, no music, no formal training - she just sits down and makes the piano sing these hauntingly beautiful, and never-the-same songs.

I'd love to be able to record it, and we've got two computers about 200 ft away in another room (I'd run a cable. I don't care).

How do I do it OTT?

It's USB MIDI.

Keyboard -> USB-MIDI cable -> Computer

Find the drivers and a good recording software and you're good go to.

Audacity is a semi-good free recoding software.

Not only will it allow you to record, but with the correct software it will expand your wife's musical arsenal. I dont know the specifics of that board, but my old roomate had his keyboard hooked to his PC and could literally assign any sound to any key he wanted only it played through the computer, not the keyboard. It was a keys only board, it needed a stand alone amp. High dollar full 88 key board, but he is a professional musician (percussion). /bragaboutshitthatisn'tevenmine

I didn't know midi devices could be connected directly to a computer. but the usual method is to connect to an audio interface ( soundcard) which will be connected to the computer.

an entry level interface costs about 100$ .

as for the recording softwares, you can use audacity or reaper for free or try expensive softwares. most softwares let you try it for a month or so.
