how do i put music onto my virgin mobile shutter phone using an adapter?

i have a v mobile shutter and i brought a scan disk memory card that came with an adapter, i have a targus brand card writer and wenever i put the adapter in to the card writer, my computer restarts and blanks out. i need to kno is this normal, should i jus wait a little and see what happens , or do i need to download a program or somethin(i have wondows xp)
